The listener email stating that Trek has never had an Indian main character is not entirely correct, Ron Moore had the following to say regarding DS9′s Doctor Bashir:

“In my mind, Julian was of Sudanese (like Sid), Indian, or Pakistani extraction, but that the family’s roots were probably in England, hence the accents.”

Not only that, but consider the parents: Bashir’s mother was played by an Arab actress, but his father was played by Brian George, who was born in Jerusalem of Iraqi-Jewish parents from India. (He plays Raj’s father on Big Bang Theory.)
Also, presumably Troi’s father was Greek; Sirtis’s parents were from Greece, though she was born in London, and Ian Troi was supposed to be from London.
B’Elanna’s father was played by actor Juan Garcia.
So, Greeks, Latinos and Indians have been represented, although only in fractions.
